Today’s school systems are faced with many challenges, one of the biggest being the integration of technology into the classroom while still holding the line on the construction budget. The Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School project has accomplished both through smart interior design.
One of the key ways in which costs were controlled was the innovative use of COST PER SQ FT$141.38FEATURED IN2004 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYCommon Areas areas. An example is the school’s cafetorium, which eliminates the need for a separate cafeteria and music/performance area. Instead, the architect combined the two into a space that not only has enough room to serve food to the school population, but also can be transformed into a modern and acoustically sensitive performance center. The space at this school eliminates the acoustical problems typically associated with multifunctional room design.
Another interesting feature is the student gathering area, which helps add to the sense of community in the school. It incorporates a large flatscreen display so it also can be used as another presentation area for the school and community. In essence, the school has two functional assembly areas.
