The Springdale School District’s High School and Middle School West campus is a product of a long-range planning process responding to the school district’s unprecedented growth. The schools sit on a 122-acre site in a rapidly expanding, easily accessible section of town.
The middle school is divided into four educational pods, each consisting of CAPACITY2,000COST PER SQ FT$88.00FEATURED IN2003 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress five-teacher teams. The core includes administrative, library, computer services, special education, music and cafeteria/commons areas.
The exterior facade complements the high school’s character, yet establishes a separate identity for the middle school. Most of the interior walls are concrete masonry units. The building’s core is a pre-engineered structural frame with a standing-seam metal roof. The educational pods are steel-frame construction. Individual rooftop package units provide heating and cooling.
Colonnaded entries at the high school academic building, a competition gymnasium, a 1,200 stepped-seat auditorium, and the landscaped campus “green,” reflect the design elements of the college campus. The two-story rotunda leading to the media center creates a focus for the academic wings. The media center’s placement reinforces the district’s emphasis on integrating the media center into the students’ daily activities.
The two-story academic wings are in departmental configurations. This arrangement facilitates planning, equipment sharing and teaming efficiencies, and maximizes daylight in both schools. Every classroom is wired and networked for student and teacher computers, and for a ceiling-mounted video projector.
The principal structure for the campus is steel frame, concrete slab on prepared fill for ground floor and composite slab for the upper level. The auditorium will have load-bearing masonry walls and long-span roof trusses. The prevailing HVAC system is a dual-fan/dual-duct variable-air volume with multiple temperature-control zones, rooftop cooling and a boiler plant.
