Freedom Elementary School’s design is the result of input from a committee of administrators, teachers, building and maintenance personnel, and parents. The purpose was to create a technology-rich educational environment that enhances the learning experience. The final plan features a unique classroom cluster, which provides for an activity area and circulation in the CAPACITY900COST PER SQ FT$103.20FEATURED IN2003 Architectural Portfolio with classrooms and teacher-prep areas at the perimeter. The classroom layout, along with the multipurpose room and media center, enhances social interaction among students and teachers.
The new elementary school contains special-education ESL and ALS programs, music, art, science and discretionary spaces, which will allow increased flexibility in the curriculum. Together, these spaces, integrated with the classroom areas, embody a facility that serves current curriculum needs and can accommodate future changes.
The use of colors and textures creates a lasting architecture reflective of the desire to learn through one’s environment. The platform can be used from the dining room, the gymnasium or both during a large production. It also opens up to the “half circle” lobby for small gatherings or guest speakers.
