The original Plemmons Student Union is a two-story structure built in 1965. Multiple areas of renovation and improvements were made under this project and confined to two areas on the second floor.
The most daunting design challenge was to renovate an existing study lounge into a space that could house both its current use by day and provide a venue COST PER SQ FT$104.00FEATURED IN2003 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYInterior RenovationSUB CATEGORYRenovation entertainment. These two extremes were brought together through an energized design that encourages daily individual and group study with easily accessible data ports, while at night transforming the space into a dazzling nightclub environment with special lighting, large-screen TVs, sound system and stage. Several elevated levels were created to divide and organize the space, covered with a combination of terrazzo tile flooring for durability and maintenance, and carpet for comfort and sound absorption.
A bowling alley was demolished to create room for a multipurpose space. A sound-absorbing movable partition separates approximately 4,000 square feet into two equal rooms. Fabric-wrapped acoustical panels adorn the upper portion of wall surrounding the space with a wood panel system below. Lecture positions were designed with a black acoustical panel system projected from the main wall in order to highlight the speaker with maximum contrast and minimal reflectivity, and to hide all audiovisual connections and write-boards in the wall.
