Beacon High School

Beacon, New York

From the beginning, the Beacon City School District said it did not want just an auditorium—it wanted a 1,000-seat theater for its new high school’s music and theater departments. That vision dictated the design philosophy behind this major focal space that connects school and community.

The volume of the auditorium and the materials of the wall surfaces create the ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$160.00FEATURED IN2003 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYAuditoriums/Music Rooms characteristics required for the functions of this room. The architect carefully planned the adjacent spaces to accommodate for set design, dressing rooms and musical equipment. The front stage includes side wings with stairs and ramps to allow the audience to be involved with the program.

The colors selected bring out the rich school colors, yet maintain a dark, “black box” feel for stage performances. The seating includes removable ADA-compliant seating and a removable area for accurate sound checks. The rear, tiered seating combines the benefit of improved sightlines with the ability to hold small-group instructional classes in each of the sections.

This adaptable room accommodates many functions both during and after school.
