The new Bernard Middle School, scheduled for completion in August 2003, will soon become the flagship educational facility in the Mehlville School District. When completed, the two-story, 137,600-square-foot building will house about 800 students in grades 6 to 8.
The basic design of the building is founded on the independent grade-level CAPACITY800COST PER SQ FT$98.00FEATURED IN2002 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress concept. Additionally, each house is subdivided into two separate teams of 130 students. Individual building wings and floor levels serve as a natural buffer to separate the three grades, yet all houses are connected by the common element of the administrative suite on the first floor, and the library/media center on the second floor.
Primary academic features of the building include a dedicated distance-learning laboratory and technology laboratory, both of which are integrally attached to the library/media center. Science classrooms, FACS classrooms, industrial-arts and industrial-technology classrooms as well as band and vocal classrooms are also substantial features and influential design elements of the new middle school.
