This addition and renovation to Boston Latin School, a well-known urban school in a highly visible location, expanded the school’s fine- and performing-arts facilities, created a new media center and improved accessibility.
A new 50,000-square-foot, three-story wing includes a relocated and fully accessible main entrance. The upper floors contain a performing-arts area with rehearsal and performance space, including a black-box theater and electronic music labs; and a fine-arts center with art and graphics studios, a darkroom and student gallery space.
The cafeteria and kitchen in the original building were transformed into an expansive library/media center more appropriate to the needs of this rigorous college-preparatory program. Resources include work areas that accommodate student laptops, seminar rooms and computer labs for research, a memorabilia room housing the school’s rich history, and a college resource room.
Renovations included acoustic and finish improvements to the school’s historic auditorium, and upgrades of all classrooms, laboratories and support spaces.
