To accommodate educational space needs more efficiently and relieve the tight site conditions at the K-6 elementary school, the district decided to attach an elementary school for grades 3 to 6 to the existing middle/high school. The existing building was renovated. Each facility is designed to operate as an independent school.

The upper elementary school consists of ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY375COST PER SQ FT$101.60FEATURED IN2002 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized classrooms, a 300-seat cafeteria with a stage, a library/media center, computer lab, science rooms, art room, music rooms, auxiliary gymnasium, weight-room and administration/guidance offices. The gymnasium and cafeteria are shared facilities.

Allowance for future expansion, such as housing for county special-education units and Head Start programs, was incorporated into the planning.

The design of the new building is straightforward and compatible with the original building, thus creating a smooth transition. The design introduces an abundance of natural light, enhanced by the two courtyards that contribute to the feeling of openness and a pleasant teaching environment.
