The Diane Bollinger Memorial Gymnasium is a joint-use project that represents a partnership between the Lawndale Elementary School District and the City of Lawndale. The gymnasium is on the flat site of a former hard-top play area on the perimeter of Rogers Middle School. It is the only gymnasium in the school district and in the city to serve students and the community COST PER SQ FT$164.00FEATURED IN2002 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized grade levels K to 8. Adjacent to the gymnasium are a new large parking lot, relocated basketball courts and new handball courts.
The design is the result of collaborative meetings with school district and city representatives. A joint-use agreement guides activities, space allocations and responsibilities.
The building includes a lobby area large enough for prefunction events; offices for school district and city staff; a formal conference/seminar room; a food-service concession area; a wing of three multiuse activity/classrooms that can be secured from the remainder of the building, and a full indoor gymnasium/basketball court with cross courts and bleachers. Areas of use are zoned for ease of supervision and independent hours of operation.
Building materials were selected for ease of maintenance, durability and economy.
The Bollinger gym provides secure entrance to the school site and a dedicated focal point for afternoon and weekend community activities.
