That charge from the educational specifications was the genesis of this middle school. A central commons provides focus for all members of the school community. All subject and support areas gather around the commons—academic teams, art, music, athletics and administration—no group is “down the hall.” The commons itself contains the media center, cafeteria and a courtyard—all designed to allow students choices of activity. Each academic team, in turn, has its own team area that supports the creation of smaller communities of collaborative learners.
