Holy Family Regional School

Rochester Hills, Michigan

When visitors enter this new middle school for grades 4 to 8, the immediate emotions evoked are exactly the outcome that the principal and building committee want: feelings indicative of the school’s namesake, the Holy Family—warm, caring, embracing. The circular entry rotunda reinforces those emotions. The location is at the heart of the school and the center of all activities surrounding it.

The initial program requirements for the building called for 85,000 square feet of space, but the budget would allow only 70,000. The design team created spaces that are multiuse, flexible and appropriate for the programmatic uses of all grades. The multipurpose room, with flexibility to subdivide, conjoins the cafetorium to allow for even larger groups of 420 or more for school plays, concerts or other stage performances. Vocal and instrumental music classes use the stage during the week so that its maximum benefit is realized.
