Greenwood Elementary School, Classroom Addition

South Holland, Illinois

Additional space was necessary to accommodate a steadily increasing enrollment. To better serve the community, Greenwood Elementary School needed to expand.

The challenge was to look through the eyes of a child and create an atmosphere that promoted creativity and enthusiasm, while maintaining the structure and organization necessary for learning. The design of the ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$99.46FEATURED IN2002 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYClassrooms facade and interior spaces was to be in concert with the major elements of the original building.

The solution was an overall theme of bright, cheerful and colorful classrooms with spacious areas to develop motor skills and facilitate group activity. Each of the six new kindergarten classrooms has its own restroom, sink, storage area, coat area and cubbies. A carpeted story/rest area makes up a portion of each room; multicolored tables make up the remainder. Exposed primary-colored beams add extra height and openness.

The theme was carried forward throughout the new multipurpose/lunch room, kitchen, speech and social workers’ offices, and additional student washrooms.
