Hillside Elementary School needed more space to accommodate its growing student enrollment and meet curriculum goals. Improving the core facilities and reorganizing the school around grade clusters were most important to the district.
The solution involved a new addition that includes three kindergarten rooms, three first-grade rooms and a multipurpose room. The connecting corridor outside the kindergarten rooms widens at the courtyard to make space for small-group instruction, small gatherings and a place for parents waiting to pick up students.
The kindergarten rooms take advantage of natural daylight by means of vaulted open space with clerestory windows. The bright, functional multipurpose room is a gathering space for lunch, physical education and music. Flexibility to accommodate dual activities is accomplished with a movable room divider.
