The basement houses student-activity and support spaces. A double-height lobby and main stair connect the primary teaching areas.
The design is rooted in the juxtaposition and interplay of the 1898 structure and its 21st-century function. Inside, crisp finishes break away to reveal glimpses of the original structure. Strong color and material contrasts, and natural/artificial light sources reveal and define planes and junctures.
Challenges to the renovation included the addition of reinforced shotcrete seismic bracing to the masonry exterior bearing walls. Extensive coordination was required to insert modern HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection and data within existing floor heights.
“Wow! An incredible transformation. A well-executed jewel of a plan hidden inside the shell of a beautiful late-19th-century structure.” 2002 Jury
