For the first major school construction project for Barnesville in more than 30 years, it was critical to develop a community consensus. In planning the new middle school, the administration and design team worked with faculty, students and local citizens. The resulting design offers aesthetic qualities reflective of community values. The school, housing students in grades 5 to 8, will contain classrooms, gymnasium facilities, a multimedia center/production room, auditeria, computer/CADD labs, project/science labs and music/art rooms. The two-story building is divided into two “pods” per floor—each centered on a project lab, four classrooms and a faculty center, providing private space for teachers.
The site overlooks an existing pond and wetland area, allowing for student dining , and an after-hours terrace and a boardwalk through the wetlands as an outdoor learning laboratory. The existing high school is on the same campus, allowing use of the existing auditorium and band rooms by the middle school students.
