The architect initially provided a needs-assessment study for this project. The renovation design encompassed about two-thirds of the 300,000-square-foot library.

The project includes a complete redesign of reference, reserve, government documents and periodical collections, as well as redesign of the circulation and administration areas. The reference room includes a mezzanine to increase usable area. Electronic signage has been provided at the circulation and reference desk. A new Teaching/Learning Technology Center intended for training faculty in the latest computer technology also was developed.

The project includes more than $3 million in new furniture. The phased renovation allowed the library to remain operating during the 36-month construction period.
