Kalamazoo Valley Community College wanted to provide students with a space where they could study, exercise or simply relax. The Student Wellness and Learning Center is the culmination of a retreat in which staff, students and community members participated.
The addition includes computer carrels and spaces for students to log in on laptop computers. The space allows COST PER SQ FT$166.00FEATURED IN2001 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized rejuvenation of the spirit. It blends contemporary and traditional themes dramatically. Interior landscaping, a waterfall, a pergola-covered walkway, and a curved, 8,000-square-foot skylight and space-frame system accomplish this goal.
Heating this space was especially challenging. The relative humidity of the space must be kept below 70 percent for the computers to work properly. The waterfall made this difficult. Condensation on the skylight and space-frame system also was a concern. These issues and air-circulation problems were overcome through the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system designed by the architect’s mechanical engineering department.
