As the only college building visible to passersby, the performing-arts center at Isothermal Community College had to deliver an important and dynamic message to the community. The auditorium can accommodate professional theatrical and musical events, and is equipped with a flyloft, and acoustic, video and theatrical systems.
One of the biggest challenges in the design was architecturally blending three unrelated functions of the building. In addition to being a sophisticated performance venue, the building had to fill a community need for conference space, as well as the college’s need for continuing-education program space. The massing of the continuing education and community conference center spaces combines with the lobby of the auditorium to create a strong geometric composition for the building’s facade.
