As the second building on a newly relocated campus, Barrett Forum needed to serve multiple uses for Allen College. The forum name became an early indicator of how the college viewed the building. Those involved in its development wanted the building’s design to promote and encourage assembly and discussion among the students and staff.
Starting with the round COST PER SQ FT$141.00FEATURED IN2001 Architectural Portfolio front entry plaza, the building creates gathering and discussion spaces. Immediately inside the front doors is the students’ lounge—the center of the building’s activities. It looks onto the central portion of the campus and onto the sculpture garden that creates yet another outlet for discussion.
Radiating from this central hub, students are met with multiple atmospheres for learning. The Barrett Library, named for its benefactor, houses the nursing college’s collection and creates intimate, comfortable gathering spaces for group learning and individual study. General-purpose classrooms vary in capacity from 16 to 34 students to provide scheduling flexibility.
The nursing skills laboratory and the radiology laboratory offer tomorrow’s healthcare professionals hands-on learning of the most up-to-date methods in patient care and X-ray technology.
