The J. Erskine Love Jr. Manufacturing Building for the Georgia Institute of Technology is home for the School of Material Sciences Engineering and will provide additional facilities for the School of Mechanical Engineering. The 151,000-square-foot laboratory facility is the largest of its kind in Atlanta and one of the premier material-sciences engineering research COST PER SQ FT$152.00FEATURED IN2001 Architectural Portfolio in the country.
A sweeping curtainwall encloses a three-story glass lobby that links the two building wings like a sculptural lantern. Bridges spanning the space afford views down into the lobby, toward the Olympic aquatic center, and out into the student quadrangle. It provides an image for the building and the research complex.
The two wings house laboratories, student and faculty offices, and interdisciplinary classrooms. The building’s lab module was designed to provide maximum flexibility for multiple-lab arrangements, and maximum space efficiency. It also will accommodate the labs’ future needs to change, grow and move within the building.
